Worth his weight in Gold: co-chairman reveals Joe Cole salary based on appearances

West Ham co-chairman David Gold has soothed the fears of fans over the £40,000-a-week wages of former England star Joe Cole, revealing to Sports Direct News that the deal agreed in January to bring the midfielder home to East London home revolves largely around the games the 31 year old plays for the club.

Playmaker Cole has played just 8 times for the Hammers since re-signing during the last transfer window after a string of niggling injuries, but Gold says there is no cause for concern over his wages.

"It was a carefully worked out deal and we knew what we were getting- and we reckon we got it right. Joe has had problems with injuries and we knew that, but when he's right he's a match-winner and a man to have in the squad. That's why much of the cash is based on appearances, it wasn't a bad deal or an ill-thought out one."

Let's just hope we see Joe back in action soon so we can start paying him some more dosh!
