Injury-hit Irons down to bare bones as three first teamers doubtful for United clash

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce will be wondering this afternoon what sins he committed in his past life, as yet another injury crisis has descended upon the Irons ahead of the visit of soon-to-be Premier League champions Manchester United tomorrow night.

Centre half James Tomkins limped out of Saturday's draw at Southampton with a calf injury, while fellow defender Winston Reid has missed the last two games through a hip injury.

Playmaker Joe Cole is also expected to miss out with a hamstring injury suffered after 10 minutes after the win at Stoke City last month. The Academy graduate is believed to be making decent progress with his rehabilitation but Wednesday's game will come too soon for him.

Left back George McCartney is expected to be out for the season, leaving  Big Sam with a whole host of injury worries and three of his defenders unlikely to be fit in time for tomorrow night.

Co-chairman David Gold tweeted on Saturday night that "James Tomkins is very unlikely to be available for Wednesday night," but Allardyce is more optimistic, telling Sports Direct News yesterday that "we'll wait and assess him closer to the game and see what we can do."

In better news, midfielder Mark Noble has a fighting chance of starting the game at the Boleyn Ground tomorrow night after making excellent progress after an operation on nerve damage in his arm- as we exclusively reported to you last week.
