Big Sam will take us into Europe, says skipper Nolan

West Ham captain Kevin Nolan has said that not only is Sam Allardyce the right man for the Upton Park hotseat, the 59 year old is also capable of leading the club back into European competition for the first time since 2006.

Writing in his Mail column today, the skipper has told of the "legacy" that Allardyce wants to build at West Ham and backed the manager to take the club into a new era in the coming years.

"Out of all the teams that have come up to the Premier League and all the teams that got relegated last season, Sam is the only one still in the same job. He wants to build a legacy here and this club will only get better under his guidance."

Nolan was managed by Allardyce at former club Bolton Wanderers and captained the Trotters to UEFA cup qualification and progression to the last sixteen in 2007/2008, and the Irons skipper sees no reason why he and mentor Allardyce can't repeat that success in East London.

"I built something with him at Bolton and we had great European adventures and we've got to be in Europe by the time the Olympic Stadium move comes around. Facing some of the top players in Europe will only add to the excitement and I think we can achieve it with Sam at the helm."

The skipper's absolutely right; if we want to have any hope of filling those 55,000 seats, we have to be in Europe. Big ask, let's hope we're up to it...
