What the Ell? Rising star Lee is hero as Dev Squad grab late point in thriller

Development Squad manager Nick Haycock has said that his side put on a good attacking display against Liverpool yesterday.

The Hammers were 3-2 down until young striker Elliot Lee dramatically volleyed an equaliser in the dying seconds of the game. The young striker was visibly overjoyed after the game, saying that the goal "is right up there" with the best he's ever scored.

The 18 year old forward also praised the team effort from the lads, pointing out that "it was always going to be tough for us against players like Raheem Sterling and Jonjo Shelvey- it was a great experience and to come here and score three goals just shows the type of players we've got in this team. We're playing Arsenal on Friday and I'm sure we can beat them."

Wellington Paulista was on the scoresheet again, scoring the Hammers’ second goal with a looping header, after Dan Potts had celebrated his England U19 call up earlier in the day by putting the Irons ahead after four minutes.

Haycock told West Ham TV: "Every time we got into the final third, I was expecting an opportunity for us and the more we did it second half, we looked a lot better. Obviously the three goals came from set pieces and on the day but that's part of the game and in terms of defending set pieces, we were better on the day.

"I actually said to the boys, it was fantastic to get the equaliser at the end, but I'm slightly disappointed. Had we shown a little more impetus in the final third, I felt there were goals to be scored today."

He was also pleased that his young side got the chance to play against the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Raheem Sterling and Suso, who are up to speed with Premier League football.
