The Premier League needs me and I'm ready for the next level: Di Canio

Paolo Di Canio yesterday told BBC Sport that he feels he has proven himself in the lower leagues and is now ready to step up to the next level- and has his eye on a Premier League managerial job.

The West Ham legend left League One promotion-chasers Swindon Town last month and has since been linked with the vacancy at Premier League strugglers Reading, who sacked manager Brian McDermott on Monday night after a run of four straight defeats that left them bottom of the league. Di Canio is so far the bookmakers' favourite for the post; although the Reading Post has claimed that ex Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion manager Roberto Di Matteo has been approached by the Royals.

In any event, Di Canio, who also turned out for Celtic, Juventus and Sheffield Wednesday during a colourful playing career, is keen on any top flight job, it would seem.

"My plan is now to only watch the top level of football- Premier League and Championship. The next step for me is important and I plan to watch a lot of football and training sessions. I have already proven myself in Leagues One and Two and helped a lot of average and arrogant footballers to become better players; now I want to find a club which has the ambition and the staff to bring in a winning mentality. The club needs to have discipline, desire, passion, a work ethic and a determination to get results," the 44 year old said yesterday.

Di Canio was of course linked with West Ham after leaving the County Ground in February, but in reality all the stories claiming that "the way was paved" for a "sensational return" to the Boleyn Ground for the Italian were simply lazy journalism putting two and two together and coming up with an elephant. Di Canio is obviously keen to prove himself at the top level, but for the moment, we have a manager. Interesting one to watch though.
