Fredi, steady, go: Piquionne for Portland- updated

In a story which has slipped under the radar somewhat, veteran striker Fredi Piquionne has left West Ham and departed for sunnier climes to sign for MLS side Portland Timbers.

The news will come as a great relief to all of us Irons, with the one time French international not having made a first team appearance since appearing as a late substitute against Nottingham Forest in January of last year, and being on reported wages of £40,000 a week. Portland confirmed the signing on February 28 and the news has only just filtered back to England, with Sky Sports only reporting the story on March 1 and no story on whufc.com as of yet.

The 33 year old forward had a trial with the Timbers last month and the club have signed him on a one year contract, with Portland manager Caleb Porter stating that "Fredi made a strong impression during his trial here and gives us another quality piece in the striker position." Porter also interestingly describes ex Irons misfit Piquionne as a "proven professional," saying that "we are very happy with this addition to our club."

So here it is; au revoir, Fredi. This would seem to be a cause for celebration, but Blowing Bubbles' sources inform us that the club is still paying a percentage of Piquionne's wages until his contract with us expires in the summer. This is rather frustrating as it would be fantastic to get the useless donkey off the wagebill for good, but even reducing it is a step forward- just have to stick it out till the summer now and we finally wash our hands of old Piq 'n' Mix.
