West Ham co-chairman David Gold has told the Daily Mail that he is "very optimistic" that manager Sam Allardyce will still be on the Upton Park hotseat next season. The 76 year old stated last month that no contract discussions would be held between Allardyce and the board until the end of the season and he told the newspaper that although the Irons are still not "mathematically safe," he is confident that the former Bolton boss will be at the Hammers next season, although he says that another club coming in for Big Sam is "always a danger," but that Allardyce has "given me his word" that he will talk about his contract at the end of the season and that he trusts him.
This story has been reported in two very different ways. The Mail's coverage of it is very much a story aimed at reassuring/exasperating West Ham fans keen for the club to retain the services of Big Sam/desperate for them to give him the boot and get a younger, more exciting manager in; yet the Daily Star's reporting of it is very much an attempt at creating uncertainty in the fanbase, with a headline of "West Ham co-owner David Gold unsure over Sam Allardyce future." What this story goes to show is how much can be read into even the most innocuous of quotes from a football club chairman- the likelihood would appear to be that Allardyce will indeed be offered a new conract; just as soon as he keeps us up. Three wins should do it.
