Sucker punched: no Hammers move for Puncheon as winger pens new Southampton deal

West Ham will not be signing Jason Puncheon this summer after the Southampton winger signed a new contract at the South Coast club, tying him down to the Saints until 2016. The ex Plymouth man's future looked last month to be up in the air, with the club giving strong indications that they were unwilling to offer him a new deal until Premier League survival had been confirmed, but a deal has now been agreed and both the Hammers and Newcastle, who were also reportedly tracking the player, are left disappointed. Puncheon described the feeling of agreeing a new deal as "amazing" and revealed his ambition for the club to be competing in European competition for the first time since 2003.
