Former Hammer Dailly to run Brentwood half marathon in memory of daughter's best friend

Ex West Ham player Christian Dailly, fondly remembered by Irons fans for his never-say-die attitude and for scoring the goal against Ipswich Town in the play off semi final second leg in 2004 which took the club to the Division One play off final, will run the Brentwood half marathon on Sunday 24 March in memory of his daughter Rosie's best friend Georgia Cordery, who sadly died of cancer aged 14 in May 2010. The fundraising trust Georgia's Teenage Cancer Appeal (GTCA) was originally set up by Georgia and Rosie and has since raised almost £400,000; and now former Scotland captain Dailly is set to run the Brentwood half marathon in aid of the Havering and Brentwood Bereavement Service (HBBS), which helped Rosie recover from the grief of losing her best friend.

The 39 year old, who retired from professional football last summer to concentrate on studying for a sports science degree, said that "it was a terrible time (for Rosie) but I always believe that through experiences like these, people grow stronger- but you've got to have the right people around you and the right friends and that's why HBBS was so important; it made sure that whatever problems existed were dealt with properly."

Both Rosie and her mother Kirsty will be running as well, in order to raise money for GTCA, and ex Boleyn Ground favourite Dailly will be aiming to finish in under 90 minutes. "We'll give it a good go and if we don't make it, at least we'll have tried," said the 39 year old, who is currently a sprint coach at Chelmsford Athletics Club.

It's great to hear this kind of thing being done and says much about Christian's attitude when he was a West Ham player- a big man with a big heart. More details of GTCA can be found at the link below.
