Paulista scores as Development Squad win again

Wellington Paulista started his West Ham career positively this afternoon by opening the scoring for the Development Squad against Arsenal. The Brazilian striker, a new signing in the January transfer window, flashed a header into the bottom corner after 21 minutes and looked impressive on his first outing in a claret and blue shirt. Youngster Matthias Fanimo sealed the win for the Hammers after he curled the ball past Arsenal keeper Martinez. Paulista managed to play for an hour before being substituted for Irish youngster Sean Maguire. The match finished 2-0, which will be a pleasing win for manager Nick Haycock, after the start to the season was disrupted by bad weather.

A goal so early on will please Wellington, who isn’t sure how long it will take him to be fully fit for the first team. Football is a confidence game, and this will do him no harm at all.
