Olympic poll results show '85% of fans back move'

The results from the SMG YouGov supporter consultation on West Ham's proposed move to the Olympic Stadium in 2016 have returned and in a resounding victory for the club's board, the statistics shows that 85% of fans who took the poll support the move to Stratford.

A further 10% said that they would potentially back the move but required more information, and 50% said that they supported the move because 'they believe it will provide the resources to improve the squad and build the club.'

These results are perhaps not surprising, given how the questionnaire was set up. With multiple choice questions requiring fans to rate various aspects of the move at various levels of importance and then no further questions delving further into those concerns that fans may have had about specific aspects of the move, the result could in a lot of senses be said to be a foregone conclusion as soon as the questionnaire was launched.

Around 12,000 supporters took the questionnaire- just over a third of the number who regularly attend home games currently.

The purpose of the questionnaire should also perhaps be called into question, given co-chairman David Sullivan's previous comment that '85% of fans support the move,' even before the supporter consultation was launched. The wisdom of 'consulting' fans on the issue after the decision had already been made to move is also a controversial topic for many supporters.

Vice-chairman Karren Brady declared herself 'delighted' at the results and said that the club must now 'engage further' with the 10% who have requested further information about the move.
