West Ham co-chairman David Gold has taken to Twitter to defend the club's new pricing which could see fans being charged up to £77 for a ticket.

Fans have also been using the social networking site to voice their discontent over the new pricing, with one fan tweeting: 'I'm a student, how am I ever supposed to afford a ticket? The prices are insane. It's a £100+ day out.'

Another supporter tweeted Gold himself, saying: 'West Ham's ticket prices are a disgrace this season @DavidGoldWHU anyone would think we are successful the amount you're charging!'

But the co-chairman, who on Friday, in an interview with Sports Direct News, pointed to the negative effects of what he described as 'mischief making reports' and said the prices were affordable.

Gold followed up on the interview, in which he made the point that clubs with the lowest ticket prices 'in many cases find themselves relegated' and that 'there is a direct correlation between prices charged and league position' by tweeting further on the subject.

He said: "If west ham reduced there (sic) ticket prices to £20 and our competitors remained the same we would soon get relegated."

This is not the first time that the co-chairman has been under fire because of ticket prices- in April, the club were strongly criticised by supporters after reports of rises in ticket prices for disabled fans.

In his tweets this morning however, Gold did accept that Premier League ticket prices generally are inflated because of players' wages, saying: 'Lowering players (sic) wages to fund lower ticket prices can only be achieved through the Premier League unfortunately the big clubs are against'.
