Irons in talks with England winger Downing

West Ham could pounce to snap up Liverpool misfit Stewart Downing on the cheap, according to the Star this morning.

The 28 year old was told by boss Brendan Rodgers in November that he was free to leave Anfield, but regained his place in the side and picked up some form towards the end of the season.

The Reds would also almost certainly have to resign themselves to taking a significant loss on the England man, who they signed from Aston Villa for £20m two summers ago.

However, getting Downing off the wagebill and saving a reported £3.64m on wages in the process would represent a worthy gamble for the Merseyside club, who were last night put on red alert after top transfer target Christian Benteke handed in a transfer request at Aston Villa.
